Surrender

‘The greatness of a man’s power is the measure of his surrender.’

William Booth

A woman whose husband died unexpectedly faced dire circumstances.

Creditors hounded her, taking everything away from her and her young son.

Fearing she might lose the most valuable possession of the family, she hid the priceless jewel that had been handed down for generations and sowed it into the sleeve of an old coat that the creditors would never want.

The troubles she faced weighed on her grief and eventually it broke her spirit and she died without ever telling her son about the jewel in the coat.

The son found himself without family or home, his only inheritance the old threadbare coat that the creditors left him.

He found work wherever he could, staying in barns or out in the forest, exposed to the elements and grave hardship.

Filled with sorrow he decided one day to accept his circumstances and surrendered all his concerns and his dreams to the universe.

The next day, he felt lighter and decided to surrender everything again.

He continued to do this each day, and as he was chopping the wood one afternoon, his sleeve caught on a branch and tore open the sleeve of the old coat and out spilled the priceless jewel onto the ground before him!

      1. I have found that the only time I find something that I’ve lost and are really, really trying to find, is when I finally give up and surrender to it, never expecting to find it, and learn to live without it, then it appears before too long. only after a true surrender

  1. Lovely story about the power of letting go. Timely for me, Karen. Thank you.

Seems we continue to meet things within us that affect our outer experience. Letting go of old habits of mind isn’t always easy…until you identify the bouldering front of you as that. Then the releasing becomes a bit easier, because knowing how we get in our own way, we decide to stop it!! 🙏🏻💜

    1. I agree Carrie, we do get in our own way! and what I keep learning is that when I truly know that life is moving in perfect harmony at all times, (this is seen in nature every day,) that it makes complete sense to surrender my egoic control and old beliefs and align with this harmony and truth.

It has been the best decision I have ever made. 🧡🥰🧡

  2. Excellent post again, Karen. You always bring me something to reflect upon and brighten the day. The opening quote of this post, ‘The greatness of a man’s power is the measure of his surrender.’ is once again something I would have liked to have understood at a younger age… but then I realized that it is through experiences and family/friends that I learned the importance of surrender. Wishing you a wonderful weekend 🙂

    1. I agree Randall. Surrender was not something I learned growing up either! But I’m glad we know more now, and can create new choices. Have a great weekend too. Thank you 😌
