‘One afternoon, Rumi was walking through the ‘goldbeaters’ market in Konya, Turkey.

As he passed the shop of a merchant and gold artisan, he heard the rhythmic, continuous sound of the artisan’s hammer beating sheets of gold into fine leaf. 

Instead of hearing mere noise and hammering, Rumi’s spiritual ears heard the sound as divine, and felt this deeply within his soul.

Overwhelmed by the rhythm of the goldsmith, and the hidden divine music he heard within, Rumi entered a state of ecstatic trance (Wajd) and he spread his arms wide and began to spin rapidly in the middle of the street.

And so, birthed the Whirling Dance, a sacred, spinning prayer ceremony that acts as a form of physical meditation.’

There are many ways to interpret this story of the Goldsmith and Sufi mystic Jalaluddin Rumi, but for me it was a simple truth about the goldsmith.

Throughout our journey it’s entirely natural to feel uninspired by the daily grind of our jobs, or the quiet routine of our everyday life, often questioning if our individual efforts truly matter in the grand scheme of things.

Yet, just as the rhythmic hammering of a simple goldsmith was enough to awaken Rumi’s highest spiritual ecstasy, we must never underestimate the profound resonance of our own small parts in life.

Every kind interaction, every task completed with integrity and patience, creates an unconscious ripple effect out into the world and although we may not always see the results of this work, trust, that your unique gifts and presence in this world is always contributing to the beautiful tapestry of all life.
