When was the last time you took of your shoes and felt the snow, grass, sand or dirt between your toes?

If I had to think of any ritual that has helped me feel more connected, centered, strong, balanced, and less stressed, it would be grounding.

Our body operates electrically. All of our cells transmit multiple frequencies that run, for example, our heart, our immune system, muscles, and nervous system.

The Earth is like a gigantic battery that contains a natural, subtle electric charge, and at the bottom of our feet are chakras, that can absorb this energy which naturally draws up into our body.

  1. Cool video. Thanks for sharing it, Karen. Grounding is probably what drives me outside every day. Living in a cold climate prohibits direct contact with the earth, but I touch trees a lot and always feel better. This must be why!

  4. Just getting outside increases my positive feeling, especially in the woods. Now grounding appears!
    I want to do it, but when there are six inches of snow, I wonder what to do. Any thoughts? Thanks for blogging this.

    1. A great question and one I know that many people ask. First off, just being in nature is a grounding experience and that is why you feel connected and positive after you have been in it. But it’s not always the same feeling as having your feet bare on the grass. So the next option, is visualising which is just as powerful!

      When you ‘visualise’ something, you enact the same neurological responses, as you would if you were ‘experiencing’ it.

      So, either sit down or stand. Take deep breaths in and out, down into your core, right down into your belly. Visualise yourself as a tree – your branches reaching into the sky, legs growing like roots into the Earth. See and feel yourself deeply connected into the soil and earth. See yourself as a strong oak tree – the perfect balance between sky and earth. With this image in mind, take three deep breaths in and out through your core – visualising that you are inhaling and exhaling this beautiful energy in nature.

      Knowing you can do this during rain, hail, snow or storm, is a great option and of course, you can use different visualisations that suit you too.

  5. Fascinating! I’m familiar with grounding during meditation (visualizing it) but didn’t know if there was anything scientific about it. It does explain why I’ve always been happiest being outside, walking on the actual earth (not cement!) And it explains why my fibromyalgia flares up when I’ve been cooped up inside during bad weather. Will start taking the practice of grounding seriously from now on. Thanks so much for sharing this video!

      1. Karen, are you by chance familiar with “Insight Timer” (a free meditation app with hundreds of guided meditations). It seems most of the meditations use grounding imagery such as your suggestion to Door County, above. It’s so reassuring, as say, to find out there’s a science to it – and that the guided imagery can really help! Thank you again. ❤️💕

      2. The app (with its many meditation topics, including ones for dealing with grief) has helped me get through the loss of my son since last May. I highly recommend it as a resource for those who’re grieving and/or depressed.

  6. I was outside in Nature yesterday. The sun was shining despite the cold. I find it a tonic for body, mind and spirit. I was actually lying on the ground in close contact to the earth for a lot of the time, taking photographs from ground level of the nature around me. Wonderful!!

  7. I love walking barefoot in the grass.
    But I am in San Antonio now, and there seems to be quite a few things hanging out in the grass….like fire ants.
    I love to walk on the beach more than anything. I lived in Hawaii for a long time, so the beach was always close by. Not anymore. Sigh.

    1. Ouch! fire ants! How wonderful to have lived in Hawaii too. So maybe some visualisations would be your best way to ground or when you go on a holiday. Thank you Mary 🌈🌿

    I love walking in the nature and to stand by the beach and do my meditation. We don’t have sand beach right here, merely rocks and when it is warm enough, I take off my shoes, as the rocks also support the grounding.
    We don’t have much grass here, mostly are yellow now and we have the risk to meat snakes in the new fresh grass, so I take care about that. To touch the trees and find grounding is also a great way.

  9. I used to go barefoot all the time. But after I developed plantar fascitis, I’ve only walked barefoot on the beach about half of the year. But now, I realize I can still take my shoes off and walk gently in my back yard, or just stand there and get grounded. This makes so much sense! Thank you!

  10. Thank you for the nice article and the information. Yes I do go out barefoot on the grass to relax and to balance myself. Especially after praying for a long time, I tend to get too energized sometimes. Grounding is very good for both the body and the mind as we are part of mother earth and when we connect to her we become balanced and even energized if when needed. Much Love and Light from me 🙂 ❤
