What Parents Can Learn about Teaching Resilience From 'Room' | Time

“In the world I notice persons are nearly always stressed and have no time…I don’t know how persons with jobs do the jobs and all the living as well…I guess the time gets spread very thin like butter all over the world, the roads and houses and playgrounds and stores, so there’s only a little smear of time on each place, then everyone has to hurry on to the next bit.”
Emma Donoghue – Room

Jack: – ‘Are we in another planet?’
Ma: – ‘Same one. Just a different spot.’

I remember after watching the movie ‘Room’ a few years ago, how moved I was by the way Jack’s mother in the movie coped and created life with her son in one room, after being kidnapped when she was a young girl.

It made me think of all of us, staying in our homes, apartments and rooms right now and how we can create and imagine whatever room we want.

We can make our home a prison, that we want to escape, or we can make our home a sacred Temple.

We can make it a place of unhappiness and stress, or we can make a creative and imaginative space each day.

Of course, each of us is adjusting the best way we can, but we all have a beautiful opportunity to open our imaginations and explore a new way of being.

So even at times, when scared is what we may be feeling.

Brave is what we are doing to create it differently.

“Scared is what you’re feeling. Brave is what you’re doing.”

  1. A wonderful, scary and unputdownable book. YES it has gotten a whole new meaning in these times. Didn’t think of it, but you are right. Great photo to it too.

    1. It’s certainly a difficult movie to watch. But what I loved about it is how real they made it. That when she was found and rescued how difficult it was to return to a normal life and how they worked through it. It’s not as awful as it seems! Hope you are doing well Kristine 💚💕🥰

  2. I just watch the movie of the mother and her son being held captive, hard to get that out of my mind. Wondered how I would do if that happened to me, thank God it has not. I think those who are held captive in their body by illness yet their minds work must struggle with something along the same lines, maybe worst though. She had her son to keep her from becoming into self often. Sometimes we are not held captive in the physcial but mentally in a prison. Your post cause me to ask myself some personal questions, thanks.

    1. Thank you for your comment and insights Betty. I agree, it’s a movie that stays with you and it encouraged me also to think about how my thoughts and beliefs can keep me trapped and that when I change my perspective, I am free. 💚💕

  3. I really like the quote and considering the circumstances I am going to choose to use my imagination. I am also trying out Duolingo to learn Spanish. I am so done with saying I never learned another language.
    Thanks for the lift Karen.
    Take care.

    1. Brava Ali. 👏 I learned Italian as an adult a few years back! It was hard. But every now and then I remember what I learned and it’s nice to know you have another language. Have fun learning 🥰💕
