Focus on Beauty

Everything has beauty, but not everyone sees it.” – Confucius

I was thinking the other day, because we are bombarded by so much pain, separation, death and heartache in our world, across all platforms of social media, we often forget to focus on all the beauty in our life.

I set a challenge for myself to take a picture of something beautiful everyday for seven days. Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder and each of us see’s beauty from a different perspective.  A child sleeping, a sunrise, a full moon, a plate of beautiful food, or as simple as dew drops on a leaf.

One thing I know for sure, it’s always there to be seen, and Mary Oliver reminds us so beautifully.

Song of the Builders

On a summer morning
I sat down
on a hillside
to think about God –

a worthy pastime.
Near me, I saw
a single cricket;
it was moving the grains of the hillside

this way and that way.
How great was its energy,
how humble its effort.
Let us hope,

it will always be like this,
each of us going on
in our inexplicable ways
building the universe.

  1. Beautiful reminder for any time. These times seem to be calling us back to seeing beauty in others and all around us more than ever. May we heed the call. Thank you for this post, Karen. 🙏🏻💕

  2. I’m sure I ‘got to know’ Mary Oliver thanks to American friends and she has become a firm and trustworthy ‘friend’. Love her writing and admire her insights. Love you for bringing forth more of her and YOUR thoughts about it. Blessings!

  3. I love your challenge, Karen, of focusing on beauty for seven days. The photo you posted is beautiful and reminds me to be more observant of my surroundings. There is beauty to be found everywhere if only we take the time to look. Beauty, I believe, fills our spirits with joy and hope and wonder. I am looking forward to your other posts on beauty! 🙂

  4. Beautiful poem, and yes there is so much of beauty around us that we fail to make note. Thank you for reminding and sharing your views with us. Love and Light from me 🙂 ❤
