The Pearl

‘If you are irritated by every rub, how will you be polished?’ – Rumi

Pearls are formed from sand entering an oyster as an irritant.

The oyster, in an attempt to defend itself from the foreign invasion, surrounds the Pearl with a calcite substance~ which eventually becomes the Pearl.

Like many natural processes in nature, the birth of a pearl takes time and patience, however, this process is very similar to our journey of self discovery and authenticity.

Like the oyster, something that initially irritates us, or challenges and pushes us in a new direction in life, is often the first step into our awakening.

And like the oyster, we can choose to accept and learn from these challenges, irritants and suffering, and find resilience to these experiences we face, or we can choose to resist them or fight against them.

But as we know, when we move through this process step by step, with patience, perseverance and acceptance, something beautiful happens.

The pearl is revealed, and its beauty and authentic light can now be shared in this world.

  1. So beautiful, Karen. It is an interesting story. The irritant becomes a beautiful treasure. Nature provides so many examples to us of who we are, how we can choose to be as we experience all that life offers us.

  2. ‘If you are irritated by every rub, how will you be polished?’ I wish I would have known this at a younger age – I didn’t take criticism well 😂 – but I suppose learning this over time was an important lesson I had to learn! Something I should always keep in the back of my mind.

    1. I think we all wish we had known this earlier!! However, in hindsight we can now see that patience and resilience, reveals the pearl! Thank you Randall 🙏🏻
