Enough

Drop the idea of becoming someone, because you are already a masterpiece. You cannot be improved. You have only to come to it, to know it, to realize it.’ – Osho

Three students were each given a block of uncarved wood.

The first student knew exactly what he wanted to create and how it would look, and although he was the first to finish, he spent the rest of his days unsatisfied with the result and wished he had done more.

The second student deliberated for months about what he would create and often felt overwhelmed by the choices he had. Each time he began to create something, he compared his work with others and felt less than. Eventually, he ran out of wood and time.

The third student, however, decided to sit quietly with the uncarved wood. He took his time to learn about the wood and its natural habitat. Over time, as he worked with it, he learned to move and flow with the natural grain and texture of the wood.

In the end, the third student finally understood; his goal was not to create a masterpiece. But rather, to see the masterpiece in the uncarved wood.

  1. So that’s what it was…I was too busy trying to create something instead of it teaching (creating) me. Great post Karen, I think we ‘knew’ everything way back when. Too young to listen, too old to speak 🤣❤️🙏

  2. This old story is, indeed, a potent reminder of the powers of observation, contemplation, and “letting it be” or allowing life to flow rather than attempting to bend it to our will. The freedom inherent in this is expansive and opens us to possibilities.

I wasn’t aware that your book was published so long ago. I so enjoyed “Courage” and now can hardly wait to receive a copy of “Moving Moments.” Thank you for including the link. 💜🙏🏻

    1. Thank you so much Carrie. It’s a lesson I have learned many times on this journey and this parable is my interpretation of the observing I did and recognising the stories that stop me from seeing the masterpiece within!

And you are right, it opens us up to all the possibilities of who we already are.

I’m so glad you are getting a copy of the book. I look forward to hearing your thoughts about it. 💕🙏🏻🩷

  3. Love this, Karen, and it is a good lesson to begin the new year with: “In the end, the third student finally understood; his goal was not to create a masterpiece. But rather, to see the masterpiece in the uncarved wood.” It reminds me of the Michelangelo quote where he sculpted what was hidden within the marble. Just like we need to sculpt ourselves as we move throughout life. Cheers to a wonderful year of the dragon ahead 🙂
