Pay Attention

‘There were signs. Probably more of them than I ever caught, even after the fact. But I missed them all. Maybe because I wasn’t looking for them. I was too busy checking over my shoulder at the fire I’d just come through to pay much attention to the thousand-foot cliff looming in front of me.’ – Gayle Forman

In a world full of distractions and the constant feed of information at our fingertips, it’s easy to miss the signs and guidance that life naturally offers each day.

As tradition dictates, upon entering his Zen master’s house, the disciple left his shoes and umbrella outside.

“I saw through the window that you were arriving,” said the master. “Did you leave your shoes to the right or the left of the umbrella?”

“I haven’t the least idea. But what does that matter? I was thinking about the secret of Zen!”

“If you don’t pay attention in life, you will never learn anything. Communicate with life, pay each moment the attention and the value it deserves – that is the only secret of Zen.”

  1. More than ever, this piece of wisdom is something I need to repeat more and more… slow down, lift up my head and enjoy everything around me. Wishing you well, Karen.

  2. Still catching up after a hiatus and loving absorbing your gems of wisdom bit by bit, Karen:). MIndfulness–an ever-present challenge (pun entirely intended). One I’m wrestling with today so thank you for the reminder, as always.
