A Symbol

Every choice we make, every thought, or belief we hold, has the ability to take us away from the path or move us back onto the path. – Richard Wagamese

The book Óne Drum’ by Richard Wagamese, shares how the feather is a symbol of the journey we are on as human beings.

The feather’s shaft in the middle of the feather represents the foundation and the path we are on and the filaments beside the stem are the choices we make along our journey.

Every filament is a choice that has the ability to take us from our foundation and path, but it is also the way back at the same time.

Choice is a powerful teacher and we are always free to choose again.

In other words, we should not waste time and energy on regrets or our past decisions, but rather, focus on the opportunity we have each day, to choose a new direction that will move us back to our truth and freedom.

  1. this is so true, and if we ever question it, all we need to do is to look back upon our lives so far, to see what landed us where we are

  2. Wonderful post, Karen. A very important comment you wrote which is worth repeating every so often: “Choice is a powerful teacher and we are always free to choose again.” 🙂

  3. Beautiful words Karen. A many splendoured path we are on and indeed our choices attend us all in so many ways to help us achieve it. Great share, thank you 😀❤️🙏

  4. Karen, I’m just getting here to read your post. Feathers are a favorite natural symbol to find or notice and to pick up, look closely at and reflect on.

Until I read this, I wasn’t familiar with the intricate symbolism described here.

Henceforth I shall see feathers differently, if not more deeply than I have before. Thank you for offering this and for the introduction to the author. 💜🙏🏻

    1. I’m so glad Carrie. You will love his books and wisdom. He died in 2017 when he was
62 yrs. But his wisdom and indigenous storytelling will live on for us all. 🤗🙏🏻
