‘You give but little when you give of your possessions.
It is when you give of yourself that you truly give.’
Kahlil Gibran
A wise woman who was walking in the mountains found a precious stone in a stream.
The following day she met another traveler who was hungry and tired, and the wise woman opened her bag to share her food.
But the traveler saw the precious stone and instead, asked the woman if he could have it. She gave it to him without hesitation.
The traveler left, rejoicing in his good fortune because he knew the stone was worth enough to give him security for life.
But a few days later he came back to return the stone to the wise woman.
‘I’ve been thinking,’ he said, ‘I know how valuable this stone is, but I am giving it back in the hope you can give me something more precious.’
‘Teach me how you are able to give so freely.’
